What was supposed to be a joyful mission of love has turned into tragedy for family and friends of a North Vancouver businessman.

Justin Kyllo, 51, was in Tanzania as part of the Wings of Kilimanjaro charity expedition to raise funds for clean water and educational programs for East Africans.

Kyllo and others scaled the 5.8-kilometre-high Mount Kilimanjaro.

But when he tried to paraglide back down from the summit, his parachute reportedly failed, causing him to plunge to his death.

Kyllo was the owner of Smoke and Bones BBQ in North Vancouver.

His death was revealed by Tanzania Parks.
