The NBA swept through Vancouver last night (October 17), presenting a preseason game between the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Clippers that left fans hungry.

“We want Grizzlies!" some 17,000 people at Rogers Arena chanted through the fourth quarter. "NBA please come back!" one man’s sign read in the stands, according to the Canadian Press.

Aside from the Grizzles, the loudest cheers of the night went to the Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard, whom fans welcomed back to Canada on account of the 2018-19 season he spent with the Raptors in Toronto.

Canadian NBA players Dwight Powell and Mfiondu Kabengele (playing for the Mavericks and the Clippers, respectively) also received warm receptions when they thanked the sell-out crowd for joining them just before tipoff.

Leonard only sank five of 19 shots last night and his fan-favoured L.A. Clippers lost 102-87 to the Dallas Mavericks. But neither team was who the Vancouver crowd was really cheering for. “Grizzlies are indigenous to Vancouver,” another fan’s sign read.

Georgia Straight contributing photographer Andrew Chin was there and brought back this taste of the action.
