A large blaze broke out at a gas station in the Port Kells area of Surrey early this morning.

At 5:30 a.m. today (October 21), Surrey Fire Service and Surrey RCMP received a report about a fire at a Petro Canada gas station in the 8700 block of Harvie Road.

Once firefighters brought the fire under control, the area was searched. Unfortunately, one person located inside the gas station was found dead.

Global News reported that an explosion took place inside the convenience store, but the fire did not affect any fuel tanks or pumps.

The cause of the fire is still to be determined and the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Surrey RCMP or, to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers.

The fire was located across the street from the Port Kells Community Hall, which has a polling station that will remain open today for voting, according to news reports.
