Metro Vancouver chair Sav Dhaliwal says New Democrats have an opportunity to work with a Liberal minority government under Justin Trudeau.

Dhaliwal, who is a long-term city councillor with Burnaby, said that the NDP led by Jagmeet Singh can help sustain a “stable” minority government.

“Jagmeet is having a wonderful evening,” Dhaliwal told the Georgia Straight at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown, where New Democrats are holding their election event.

According to the former B.C. NDP president, he was feeling good about the election results, which show that New Democrats could play a role in the new government.

“Jagmeet had laid the foundations for the party to go forward,” Dhaliwal said.

Dhaliwal recalled that when the election campaign started, New Democrats were projected to be routed in the polls.

As of 8:07 p.m., the NDP has won 24 seats, based on results gathered by the CBC.
