The longest-serving member of the B.C. legislature will not run for another term after finding herself enmeshed in a scandal.

Linda Reid was the speaker when a truckload of alcohol was taken out of the legislature in 2013 at the behest of the then clerk, Craig James.

Reid declined an invitation to speak about this with former Vancouver police deputy chief Doug LePard when he was conducting a Police Act investigation of the former sergeant-at-arms, Gary Lenz.

LePard concluded that even though the liquor was taken and was not returned to the Liquor Distribution Branch, as claimed, Lenz did not pursue this matter and was not truthful in his comments to former chief justice Beverley Mclachlin while she was preparing a report.

      Lenz has disputed LePard's conclusions.

As speaker, Reid oversaw the the legislative precinct until she was replaced as speaker Darryl Plecas after the 2017 election.

Reid told LePard that she was "away for a few weeks" on July 27, 2019.

However, Province columnist Mike Smyth recently reported that on the same day, she was posting statements about visiting a Chinese restaurant in Richmond and a community for dementia patients in Langley.

“After 28 years of service to British Columbia and to the people of Richmond South Centre, I have decided that I will not be seeking re-election," Reid said in a statement. "My priority throughout my career as an elected member of my community has been to encourage young people, especially women, to get involved in politics. I’m passionate about creating opportunities for a new generation of British Columbians to run for office—which is why I have made this difficult decision."

Reid plans to remain as the B.C. Liberal critic for seniors until the legislature is dissolved in advance of the next provincial election.
