Brown tap water in Langley not deemed to be a threat to public health

A Facebook page for residents of the Murrayville area of Langley Township includes some grim photos of the community's drinking water.

Brown liquid is seen coming out of the taps in the Lower Mainland municipality, which obtains its drinking water from 17 wells in addition to the Greater Vancouver Water District.

But the township's director of public works, Roland Zwaag, has told CBC News that it's "not a health hazard".

The colour is reportedly the result of naturally occurring manganese in the wells, which reacts with chlorine disinfectant.

Staff are willing to visit homes with brown water and flush the system to replace it with clear liquid.

In its 2018 water report, the township stated that "distribution water" adhered to the B.C. drinking water protection regulation, as well as to guidelines for Canadian drinking water quality.

However, the aesthetic objectives for colour were not met, due to "naturally occurring organic matter".
