A Vancouver parks commissioner is proposing a longer swimming season for two of the city’s five outdoor pools.

John Irwin is suggesting a trial of an extended season for Kitsilano and New Brighton pools in 2020.

The Kitsilano and New Brighton pools are open between the months of May and September.

In a motion, Irwin wants the board to approve a pilot to extend the regular 2020 swimming season at Kitsilano and New Brighton Outdoor Pools by opening two to three weeks earlier in the spring.

Irwin’s proposed test also includes closing the two pools three to four weeks later in the fall.

Irwin mentioned that an advisory group on the city’s aquatic recreation strategy had “called for extended seasons at Kitsilano and New Brighton pools to provide equitable access to both East Side and West Side residents in Vancouver”.

Located on Cornwall Avenue on the west side of the city, Kitsilano Pool is the city’s only saltwater swimming pool.

New Brighton Pool is on the east side of Vancouver.

The city had extended swimming days in outdoor pools in previous years.

“Outdoor pools are well-loved by the residents of Vancouver,” Irwin stated in his motion.
