The NDP MP for Vancouver East, Jenny Kwan, has offered congratulations to the people of Hong Kong after historic district elections on November 24.

The pro-democracy camp won 85 percent of the seats after a record-high participation rate of 71 percent.

Kwan, who was born in Hong Kong, issued a statement saying that she hopes this "democratic and peaceful approach will continue to have a place in helping to resolve the ongoing conflicts".

She also expressed a wish that the Hong Kong government would take the results as a signal to employ peaceful measures going forward.

"For anyone who has seen some of the images of the recent violence in Hong Kong, it is extremely alarming and worrisome," Kwan said in the statement. "Yet in spite of that, the election for the District Board was carried out without incident. With the record high voting rate, the people of Hong Kong overwhelmingly cast their votes for candidates who are sympathetic to the protesters and the establishment was soundly defeated. This electoral outcome also indicates that the people of Hong Kong reject the view that the demonstrators are to be blamed for the ongoing violence and chaos."

She added that if Chief Executive Carrie Lam had quickly withdrawn an extradition bill after a million Hong Kong residents rallied peacefully on June 9, the conflict would not have escalated.

However, according to Kwan, Lam decided instead to rely on police "to suppress and crack down on demonstrations while condoning police brutality against protesters and the public".

Kwan is calling on the Hong Kong administration to conduct an investigation into the violence over the past few months "to rebuild public confidence and trust in the government and the police".
