This week's cold snap coincides with this year's opening of Vancouver's only outdoor downtown skating rink.

Today, the ice sheet at Robson Square is free for kids and adults until late February, weather permitting.

      On weekdays, it's open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Skating continues until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Skates can be rented for $5 and that price include a helmet. If people only rent a helmet, it's $2.

The rink was opened by Surrey–Green Timbers NDP MLA Rachna Singh on behalf Citizens' Services Minister Selina Robinson.

“So many people have made visiting the rink part of their holiday tradition and we’re glad to be able to support a festive activity that is fun, healthy and affordable,” Singh said.

On December 3, Nordstrom will host a "Giving Tuesday" event to raise money for B.C. Children's Hospital.

The province plans to offer free skate rentals on Family Day on February 17, 2020.
