Further details about the plane crash on Gabriola Island have emerged as the investigation continues on.

The B.C. Coroners Service announced today (December 13) that investigators have positively identified one of the three individuals who died when a plane crashed on the northern end of Gabriola Island just after 6 p.m. on December 10.

Based on initial evidence gathered at the scene, investigators have determined that a male in his 60s from Mill Bay, B.C., and two others—a male and a female—died at the scene.

Investigators are still working to confirm the identities of the two others with post-mortem testing results and other work.

CBC News reported that 61-year-old flight instructor Alex Bahlsen was piloting the plane.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada, who sent an investigative team, stated that it was a piston twin-engine Piper PA-60-602P on a private flight from Eastern Sierra Regional Airport in Bishop, California, to Nanaimo Airport, B.C.

CTV News reported that an aircraft equipment issue had been reported moments before the crash.

The B.C. Coroners Service is still working to determine the circumstances of the deaths.
