Vancouver Canucks of the 2010s: Ranking the top 5 goalies of the decade

    1 of 5 2 of 5

As we near the end of the decade, we’ll attempt to round out and rank all things Canucks over the last 10 years. Here are (in our humble estimation) the top five Vancouver Canucks goalies of the decade.

It’s our final list of the best Canucks of the decade by position, and we decided to save the trickiest for last.

The other positions all had obvious number one selections, and this one is no different, but it’s immediately after that that this list gets very interesting.

Unlike the other editions, there really wasn’t much question about the five names that appear on this ranking. Was Anders Nilsson really going to sneak in? Nah. Thatcher Demko? Sorry, no. (Though he did get closer than Nilsson.)

The order, though, had to be negotiated carefully.

Here are the top five Vancouver Canucks goalies of the decade.

      5. Eddie Lack

      82 games: 34-30-9, .917 save percentage

It’s easy to feel somewhat conflicted about many of the names on this list. Eddie Lack isn’t one of them. The fan favourite and genuine good guy performed pretty well on some not-great teams in Vancouver. In fact, his .921 save percentage in 2014-15 with the Canucks was downright sparkling.

He was never the same once he left Vancouver, which kind of adds to his charm.

      4. Ryan Miller

      150 games: 64-68-16, .914 save percentage

Yes, Ryan Miller played three seasons for the Canucks, which is weird to think about now. He was even on the side of Rogers Arena!

The team was not good during the American’s tenure, but he was often the only thing keeping the Canucks in games. In hindsight, signing Miller was a mistake, mostly because it allowed the club to not bottom out completely. But he was a warrior every night.

      3. Cory Schneider

      88 games: 52-31-7, .931 save percentage

When it comes down to pure stats, no Canuck goalie in history can hold a candle to Schneider. He has the highest save percentage of any ‘tender that has played more than 20 games in team history and was an absolute machine during his (albeit limited) time with the Canucks. He didn’t play many games this decade, but his excellence when he was in the pipes was close to unparalleled.

      2. Jacob Markstrom

      211 games: 88-88-26, .912 save percentage

Maybe Marky will end this decade with a winning record. We hope it happens for him. But regardless, he’s really come into his own in the last season and a half, which puts him in the number two spot for the last 10 years.

He has his detractors, and there’s the massive matter of his pending contract. But the Swede has forced his way into the top half of goalies in the NHL, at the very least.

      1. Roberto Luongo

      177 games: 97-51-24, .921 save percentage

It was never going to be much of a competition here.

Even though his better seasons occurred before this decade began, he still had parts of five stellar campaigns with the Canucks in the 2010s. He earned a Jennings Trophy (shared with Schneider) and was nominated for a Vezina Trophy en route to posting some of the best numbers in the league.

Luongo is the best goaltender in franchise history, and even the latter half of his tenure here was more than enough to earn him this spot.

Please note the stats start with the 2010-2011 season, so they may be slightly off in some cases.
