Prince William has enlisted the help of one of the world's most respected broadcasters and natural historians to try to save humanity from itself.

Today, the Duke of Cambridge and David Attenborough launched the Earthshot Prize, which is intended to inspire people around the world to find solutions to the planet's most pressing problems.

They're calling it the "most prestigious environmental prize in history", and it will provide a multimillion pound award to five winners per year over 10 years.

The goal is to come up with 50 solutions in a decade of action to repair the Earth.

"We are at a unique stage in our history," Attenborough says in the video below. "Never before have we had such an awareness of what we are doing to the planet. And never before have we had the power to do something about that."

The Earthshot Prize website states that the winners can be individuals, teams, or collaborations who are making "substantial development" or an "outstanding contribution" to solving environmental challenges.

"People can achieve great things," Prince William said. "And the next 10 years presents us with one of our greatest tests: a decade of change to repair the Earth."
