After heightened seismic activity off the British Columbian coast during the December holiday season, another offshore earthquake occurred this morning in the region west of northern Vancouver Island.

The quake hit at 11:20 a.m. today (January 8).

Earthquakes Canada reported it as a 4.8-magnitude temblor while the U.S. Geological Survey measured it as a 4.4-magnitude seismic event, based on preliminary assessments.

The epicentre, at a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles), was located 215 kilometres (134 miles) west of Port Hardy, 383 kilometres (238 miles) west of Campbell River, and 554 kilometres (344 miles) northwest of Vancouver.

Earthquakes Canada stated that there aren’t any reports of damage and none are expected, and a tsunami also isn’t anticipated.

A series of notable quakes hit the region from December 23 to 25, ranging up to 6.2-magnitude.
