A Vancouver social housing development currently under construction will have a community clinic downstairs.

The Mid Main Community Health Clinic is proposed to transfer to this new location at 188 East 6th Avenue.

The address was formerly 2221-2223 Main Street, a whole city block between East 6th and 7th Avenues.

In 2017, the City of Vancouver approved the rezoning of the site to provide for 145 units of affordable rental housing, and a public park.

The ground floor of the development was intended for commercial uses, and a new application before the city seeks to convert part of that for a social service centre to house the clinic.

Vancouver planner Karen Hoese has submitted to council a report regarding the application, which is scheduled for public hearing on Tuesday (January 21).

“If approved, this application would allow for the relocation of a community health clinic to a larger and updated space within the community,” Hoese explained.

According to Hoese, Mid Main Community Health Clinic’s current location and facilities at 3998 Main Street are “at the end of their lifespan”.

“The relocation expands much needed services while continuing to provide services to existing patients,” the city planner wrote.

Hoese noted that Mid Main Community Health Clinic is a not-for-profit community health clinic.

The clinic opened in 1988, and provides medical and dental services.

“There are 20,000 active patients on the dental registry and 9,000 active patients on the medical registry, both with a waitlist,” according to Hoese.

The clinic’s planned relocation will require additional floor space at the development, which needs council approval.

The site is owned by the City of Vancouver. It leased the property to the Catalyst Community Development Society, a non-profit developer devoted to creating affordable homes.

On its website, Catalyst states that all the homes at 188 East 6th Avenue will be rented at below market rates.

In her report, Hoese noted that a portion of the ground floor commercial space of the 10-storey building will be used as a restaurant.
