Surrey man, 32, charged for Downtown Eastside murder in April 2019

      A Surrey man has been charged for a fatal assault that took place in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside last spring.

      On April 1, police received a call about a serious assault near East Hastings Street and Heatley Avenue.

      According to VPD Cst. Tania Visintin, a suspect and victim had an altercation that had escalated into a physical assault.

      Officers located 35-year-old Cong Tran, who was taken to hospital by paramedics. Unfortunately, Tran died of his injuries on April 6.

      During the ensuring investigation into the homicide, police have been building evidence for charges.

      The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) announced today (January 17) that 32-year-old Chad Harry of Surrey has been charged with second-degree murder, which were laid on January 16.

      He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Vancouver provincial court on February 3.
