      The next four nights are expected to be chillier than usual at this time of the year in Vancouver.

      As a result, city officials have extended an extreme weather alert through Sunday (March 8).

      That means there will be extra shelter beds for the homeless at seven locations tonight. They are:

      * Directions Youth Services Centre (1138 Burrard Street);

      * Evelyne Saller Centre (320 Alexander Street);

      * The Salvation Army Belkin House (555 Homer Street);

      * Walton Hotel Amenity Space (261-8 East Hastings Street);

      * Tenth Church (11 West 10th Avenue);

      * Powell Street Getaway (528 Powell Street);

      * and First Baptist Church (969 Burrard Street).

      On Friday night (March 6), the First Baptist Church will be closed. And on Saturday and Sunday nights (March 7 and 8), Tenth Church will also be closed.

      It comes as the forecast calls for a chance of freezing temperatures and wet snow mixing with rain overnight on Friday and early Saturday morning.

      The temperatures will remain cold until Monday (March 9).

      "While weekend snowfall accumulations are anticipated to be minimal, staff and salting/plow trucks are readied for deployment with a focus on keeping arterial routes, walking and cycling routes, and hills free of ice," the city said in a news release.

      Property owners and occupants are being advised to clear ice and snow from sidewalks by 10 a.m.

      Motorists are encouraged to use winter tires that display the three-peaked moutain and snowfall symbol or the mud and snow (M+S) symbol, with at least 3.5 millimetres of tread.
