Burrard Gateway project set to change Vancouver's skyline

A massive, skyline-piercing development proposed for downtown Vancouver will be unveiled to the public at an open house on Monday (June 24).

Called Burrard Gateway, the $500-million project is a joint undertaking of Reliance Properties Ltd. and Jim Pattison Developments Ltd.

Twenty-three lots between Burrard and Hornby streets north of Drake Street, including the Jim Pattison Toyota Downtown dealership site, have been assembled for this three-tower, mixed-use real-estate redevelopment project.

The proponents plan to build two residential towers of 54 and 36 storeys along Hornby Street with a total of 810 units.

A 14-storey office tower with a car dealership on the lower three levels is being proposed for the corner of Burrard and Drake streets.

“As a taller building, per [the] City’s mandate, this development seeks to be a leader in both design excellence and sustainability while contributing to making the city’s skyline more interesting and animated,” states a project summary submitted to city hall.

It also notes that the “surrounding neighborhood is characterized by 14 to 31 storey buildings which form tight street walls.

“The Burrard Gateway project will complete the Burrard, Drake and most of Hornby street frontages,” the summary continues. “This will leave only one corner at Davie and Hornby which can support an additional tower site.”

As the Straight went to press on June 19, the Urban Design Panel, which advises the City of Vancouver on development proposals, was scheduled to take a new look at the project, which was the subject of an original rezoning application in 2010.

The June 24 open house will be held at the Marriott Residence Inn (1234 Hornby Street) starting at 5 p.m.

Could't Jim Pattison afford a decent architect? Geeze Louise. Another boring glass tower with no architectural intererest. Come on Jimmy, this is your legacy. Build something special.

Can someone explain to me how this energy leaking air conditioned glass box fits into Vancouver’s greenest city strategy? From an environmental perspective, every one of these glass towers pushes Vancouver back into the stone age.
