Cory Schneider traded to New Jersey Devils

Vancouver Canucks president and general manager Mike Gillis has surprised many fans by trading the team's so-called goalie of the future, Cory Schneider, to New Jersey.

In return, the Canucks received the Devils' first-round pick—and the ninth overall selection—in the 2013 NHL draft.

The Canucks chose 18-year-old centre Bo Horvat. He scored 33 goals and posted 28 assists in helping London come first in the Ontario Hockey League. He also helped his team make the Memorial Cup championship by scoring a game-winning goal in the final second of the seventh game of the OHL championship.

The trade suggests that Roberto Luongo will once again be Vancouver's number-one goalie.

Luongo's multiyear, multimillion-dollar contract imposes a $5.33-million hit on the Canucks' spending cap in 2013–14, according to the capgeek website. This may have made him more difficult to move to another team.

Meanwhile, the Canucks have been grooming lanky Swedish goalie Eddie Lack on the farm team, the Chicago Wolves.

However, he suffered a serious groin and hip injury last season and underwent surgery in early 2013. Lack's expected to be back next season.

With this development, Gillis has officially closed the "window" on the Canucks' dream of winning a Stanley Cup with its current top six forwards and top four D.

In retaining Luongo over Schneider, Gillis is now reaping the shitty fruit he sowed when he convinced Francesco Aquilini to commit to the former's excessively expensive and ridiculously long contract (apparently, neither he nor anyone else in management foresaw that the salary cap could actually go down, along with a player's skills and thus worth).

No doubt Gillis thought he would get at least one Cup out of Luongo. But of course that was not to be, because as we all found out, he's not really a money goalie, despite being paid an exorbitant amount of the stuff.

Of course this is the very reason he was supplanted by the promising Schneider, who as it has turned out, has just been traded for a cross-your-fingers 18-year-old.

And that is all Gillis has received in return for a proven, potentially star NHL goalie, and by the way who the team had invested millions and years to develop.

So for all of that they get nothing more than the opportunity to go through it all over again with another greenhorn.

      Well, whoopee shit!

Clearly, there has to be a Gillis-watch declared, for his time here is limited.

Otherwise, the only bigger loser in the organization will be the one signing his cheques, not to mention Canuck fans.

That the cupboard is so bare of prospects that Gillis was forced to trade a bona fide NHLer, and a projected star goalie at that, for a young wannabe is a reflection of Gillis' lack of foresight, i.e. management skills.

      What a bonehead.

But then, I suppose that's Gillis' way of maintaining the Canuck mystique of finding yet another way to fuck things up.

And nothing embodies that mystique better than Gillis deciding to retire the jerseys of three losers.

      I second that

Come crunch time, Torts should be ready to put in goal the other guy in the photo. At least he won't represent an expensive failure.

The Canucks have just declared that they won't have a shot at the cup for at least 5 years. By then the loser goalie they kept will be gone along with everyone else of value and we can wait to see if the Canucks contend any time in the future. Keep paying your money suckers, Gilles and the owners have proven they only care about your money. Won't buy out Roberto's contract because they get nothing for it but trade the future for a 9th pick who scored 33 goals and might be an impact player in a couple of years. Gilles is gone before year end a Torts is stuck with losers. Who do the real fans cheer for now? Go Giants Go!!!

Obviously all who have posted above are part time hockey fans......Sure Gillis, yeah that's how to spell it, should have dealt with this situation differently 14 or 18 months ago but he didn't. Therefore you have to move forward with the club's best interest in mind. There was no market for Lu, a buyout is great if you are not writing the cheque, and the 'Nucks have a serious lack of prospects....hence the move that Gillis made. The only real move he could make.

I am very disappointed to see Cory go. He is a real class act, educated and articulate as well as a great player.
I used to be a fan of Lou's.I guess I didn't take his overheard diss that well. Not that he cares anyway.

The pampered prima donnas on this team are going to put on an epic sulking session this next season under the new coach. Until John gets the players he knows will work for him the Canucks will be painful to watch.
