Former Vancouver East NDP MP Margaret Mitchell endorses Mable Elmore

Mable Elmore has snagged the support of a political matriarch in her quest to become the next NDP MP for Vancouver East.

Margaret Mitchell, who represented the riding from 1979 to 1993, has endorsed the former transit operator and current NDP MLA in Vancouver-Kensington.

"I'm impressed by Mable and I think she'll be a terrific MP," Mitchell said in a statement. "Mable has my full support for the nomination in Vancouver East."

Elmore has also been endorsed by former interim B.C. NDP leader Dawn Black and former NDP municipal affairs minister Darlene Marzari.

After Mitchell was elected, she found herself at the centre of a national controversy when she raised the issue of domestic abuse in Parliament.

She said that one in 10 Canadian men regularly beat their wives, prompting male MPs to start laughing and heckling her.

Mitchell replied, "This is no laughing matter."

      It helped elevate this issue.

Mitchell was also the first MP to raise the issue of redress for the Chinese head tax.

Elmore said she's thrilled to have the support of Mitchell.

"She's a strong woman who is highly respected and passionate about many issues," Elmore said in a news release. "She was a fearless advocate and I'm committed to carrying on the fight for equality and social justice that she pioneered in Ottawa."

On Sunday (March 22), NDP members in Vancouver East will choose their candidate in the next federal election.

Voting takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Vancouver Technical secondary school.

Elmore is running against Vancouver–Mount Pleasant NDP MLA Jenny Kwan and SFU Vancouver public-relations director Scott McLean.

The incumbent, Libby Davies, has announced that she won't seek reelection after 17 years in Parliament.

      One remarkable woman endorsing another!

      Go Mable!!

interesting comparison between having Ms. Mitchell endorse a candidate as contrasted with a lifelong hack like Mr. Lewis and his support for Jenny "chequebook" Kwan. Mable Elmore has actually worked outside of being a politician, she hasn't been pushing buttons and checking boxes since high school and become a party insider. She is a fantastic MLA and has yet to require an absence from her job for any personal malfeasance or connections to such events. Frankly I am disgusted by the party core trying to force Chequebook Kwan on the riding in order to loft an albatross from the neck of the Provincial party. Keep an eye on those new memberships team Mable and don't let the hack hijack the nomination. We need a sensible voice in Ottawa, one that isn't already tied to scandal, and that voice is Mable Elmore.

Yep I joined the NDP because I want to help Mable win any legal way I can. I am sick of "socialists" who betray their constituents and live like 1%ers. There are too few people in the upper reaches of the NDP who have Mable's background and we need to support good people over connected people. Carol James was a good person but the NDP core thought they were going to win in 2013 and wanted a connected person (man) at the helm: whom did they trust to make the first cut? Jenny Chequebook Kwan. Jenny Kwan hasn't done much for her constituents over her time in office, things haven't improved much in the area and her "support" consists of showing up at ribbon cuttings while taking credit for the hard work of others. She has a dedicated coterie of cheer leaders who make sure to get the faithful out but ultimately she is a hack in a safe seat. Leave her where she is and send Mable Elmore to Ottawa.

      Go Mable:

      1. Jenny was right to call out Carole James after her disastrous leadership in the 2013 campaign. James never articulated NDP opposition to the Liberals' phony Carbon Tax beyond "We'll have to agree to disagree". Contrary to your claim of "make the first cut", a dozen MLAs had already insisted Carole step down before Jenny weighed in.

      3. I sincerely hope you're not one of those people who bitches about young people not getting into politics, otherwise you're a hypocrite - Jenny getting elected to Vancouver City Council at the age of 26 is not something she has to feel ashamed of.

      4. As a Mount Pleasant resident, the neighborhood has changed remarkably for the better in the decade and a half I've lived here, a lot of which has to do with Jenny's consistent advocacy. You claim she's taking credit for other people's work while at the same time claiming things haven't improved - which is it?

Jenny isn't the hack, YOU ARE, with your revisionist history about Carole James (plus the fact you can't even spell her name correctly). What I'm sick of is trolls and paid attack dogs like you who aren't New Democrats (and no, buying a membership to massage your hate-on for Jenny doesn't make you a New Democrat), and don't live in the riding trying to influence the vote with your bullsh*t slander.

Go Mable!! - your comments are completely uncalled for and should be an embarrassment for the Elmore campaign.

LMAO! Talk about an "attack dog!" You are the worst kind of "socialist:" a champagne sipper who goes the party line like an obedient poodle. Jenny Kwan is a vapid individual who either failed to oversee her family finances or knowingly stole money from he poorest of our local citizens: your choice. I absolutely loathe the Dix wing of the NDP: they screwed up the last election, heck how many more votes did he get than James anyway? Of course she "had to go" because the idiots who run the party had fantasies about actually winning an election with a party loyalist.

Did I misspeeeeel Karole Games' nome? Oh how slily of me! Of corse thet cumpleetly negates the content beekawze unless Inglisch is writes proper thee writinger must be wrong. Good post ursa minor, keep believing in and supporting the party hack because it has worked so well for so long.

      Go Mable!

@ James Blatchford if the media hadn't treated Chequebook Kwan with kid gloves she wouldn't even be considering this run. There is nothing untrue in my comments above, and the drones like urrsa minor can rally the troops and give me thumbs down. Tearful apologies and a few months leave may buy off the party hacks but they shouldn't be swallowed by the media.

      great endorsement

It's great to see how many members of the Vancouver East community (as opposed to establishment outsiders) are supporting Mable. Mable is a true grassroots organizer, as well as extremely positive, welcoming, and approachable. For that reason alone she's got my support!

Jenny has a good retirement package ... it's time for her to use it, and step out of the limelight. She's done good work, mostly, but has been preyed upon, and co-opted, by some of the worst of the poverty pimps.

      Go East Van, go!

      Don't make me vote Liberal!!!
