NDP MP blasts Conservative MP Wai Young’s Jesus comments as “profoundly stupid”

A NDP MP says Conservative MP Wai Young’s comments likening the Stephen Harper government’s pushing through of antiterrorism bill C-51 to the work of Jesus Christ ranged from “the profoundly stupid to the incredibly ignorant”.

“I don’t know how this woman is still a candidate for the Conservatives,” Nathan Cullen, the MP for Skeena-Bulkley Valley, said in an interview at the Georgia Straight office. “The level of ignorance and misinformation coming out of one speech is profound. And yet I think this is what the Conservatives think they were doing with [Bill] C-51. They are attempting to shred the Charter of Rights and Freedoms with no benefit to security. And now they’re out trying to scare people and just saying we could have stopped something as tragic as Air India. I find it offensive. I can’t imagine what the families of those victims are thinking, when their tragedy is being hauled out to justify such awful legislation.”

Young, the MP for Vancouver South, made her comments during a speech to the congregation at Harvest City Church.

“Jesus served, he saved, but he acted, as well,” Young said last month.

Young went on to say: “I want to share with you what I think our government is doing in the same vein—Jesus served and acted to always do the right thing, not the most popular thing.”

Referring to the 1985 bombing, the Conservative MP also made the bizarre claim that “if Bill C-51 had been in place 30 years ago, Air India would never have happened”.

On Twitter, Young’s words inspired a flood of satirical tweets using the hashtag #CPCJesus.

In a statement, Young claimed she “misspoke with regards to the investigation of the Air India bombing”.

“I regret this error,” Young stated.

Cullen predicted Young will be unavailable for interviews from now until the federal election this fall.

“I don’t think you’re going to gain any access, because there’s somebody in Harper’s shop right now, saying, ‘How do you quiet this person down?’” Cullen said. “You can understand why Harper muzzles so many of his own MPs though.”

The NDP MP went on to raise the spectre of Young potentially becoming a cabinet minister in the future.

“How much bench strength has this government lost, in terms of their ministers and such?” Cullen asked. “She would be a candidate for cabinet. You laugh, but I’m not kidding. Who else they got? She would absolutely be a candidate for cabinet. This is how low the standard has gotten for Harper.”

Way back in the olden days, Canadians were wary of Stephen Harphole and his bunch because they seemed to be Christian fundamentalist nutbars. Now we have the truth, they are fundamentalists and nutbars utterly unsuited to govern anything beyond a gas bar. How did Canadians become so stupid in their voting? Is the national IQ dropping towards 60? Apparently it is.

Glad Cullen finally brought up the families and friends of the Air India bombing victims.
The bizarre, stupid comments by Wai Young must be beyond hurtful to them.
Can you imagine if someone you loved was on that plane and now this idiot is trying to score some cheap political points on their suffering?
I guess it's too much to expect that Wai Young will apologize to them?
She'd have to open her mouth and start talking again-Harper can't have that.

I just do not understand why the people who wrote the playbook refuse to follow it...
I was under the impression they respected history.

“Let us be reminded that before there is a final solution, there must be a first solution, a second one, even a third. The move toward a final solution is not a jump. It takes one step, then another, then another. Something, perhaps, like this: Construct an internal enemy, as both focus and diversion. Isolate and demonize the enemy by unleashing and protecting the utterance of covert and coded name calling and verbal abuse. Employ ad hominem attacks as legitimate charges against that enemy. Enlist and create sources and distributors of information who are willing to reinforce the demonizing process because it is profitable, because it grants power and because it works. Palisade all art forms; monitor, discredit or expel those that challenge or destabilize processes of demonization and deification. Subvert and malign all representatives of sympathizers with this constructed enemy. Solicit, from among the enemy, collaborators who agree with and can sanitize the dispossession process. Pathologize the enemy in scholarly and popular mediums; recycle, for example, scientific racism and the myths of racial superiority in order to naturalize the pathology. Criminalize the enemy. Then prepare, budget for, and rationalize the building of holding areas for the enemy—especially its males and absolutely its children. Reward mindlessness and apathy with monumentalized entertainments and with little pleasures, tiny seductions: a few minutes on television, a few lines in the press; a little pseudo-success; the illusion of power and influence; a little fun, a little style, a little consequence. Maintain, at all costs, silence." - Transition Era Poet Morrison from The 15% Solution by Steve Jonas

But it's not true. What Wai Young meant to say is that Harper's the Anti Christ.

Thank you so much for stepping outside of the mealy mouthed norm we've become so used to and saying what really needed to be said the way it needed to be said.
      XO me.
