51-year-old male suspect charged in fatal shooting at Vancouver's Coal Harbour

      A man has been charged in a brazen fatal shooting that took place in a busy area of Downtown Vancouver last weekend.

      Around 8:30 p.m. on April 17, gunfire took place outside Cardero’s restaurant in Coal Harbour. Police arrived to find 31-year-old Harpreet Singh Dhaliwal dead at the scene. 

      The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) announced today (April 24) that 51-year-old Francois Joseph Gauthier has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm (without authorization or license).

      Gauthier is in custody until his next appearance in Vancouver provincial court on Thursday (April 29).

      Since the Coal Harbour shooting, there were other fatal shootings that took place in Metro Vancouver.

      At 6:30 p.m. on April 19, 20-year-old Bailey McKinney was shot dead in Town Centre Park in Coquitlam.

      Then at 9 a.m. on April 21, a man was fatally shot outside the Langley Sportsplex, which is frequented by families and children. On April 22, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) stated that the victim was 46-year-old Todd Gouwenberg of Langley. 

      IHIT Insp. Michelle Tansey stated that Gouwenberg was involved in gangs and that the shooting was targeted but that investigators do not yet know the motive for the shooting.

      Investigators have not yet stated if any connections have been established between these shootings.
