East Vancouver's Empire Fields and Plateau Sports Park may get a new name

It has to rank as one of the clunkiest names of any park-board facility.

But Empire Fields and Plateau Sports Park has endured for a while for the former B.C. Lions stadium location at 2901 East Hastings Street.

      But that could soon change.

At the next Monday (September 14) board meeting, Comm. Sarah Kirby-Yung will introduce a motion to convene a park-naming committee.

Given the NPA majority on the park board, there's little chance that the area will be renamed Gregor Robertson Park.

But perhaps an NPA park-board political icon from a bygone era, say former TransLink chair George Puil, might be in the running.

If a park can be named after former NPA commissioner Andy Livingstone, why not for the longest serving NPA politician in the city's history?

After all, Puil was a helluva rugby player in his day.

Oh goody, exactly the neighbourhood needs. You put thousands of dollars worth of equipment in the park that people have ripped up and vandalized less than 3 months, but nothing like a shiny new name to gloss over that.

Put a wide bridge over McGill and the train tracks to the waterfront and call it New Brighton Park.

Better, take the PNE grounds ON Hastings Park and make it one park.

Expel E-Com 911 service from Hastings Park lands south of Hastings and Cassiar and make it the biggest East End park of all.
