Richard Nixon: Justin Trudeau will be PM

Over the years, former U.S. president Richard Nixon has been accused of many things. Clairvoyance, however, has never made the list.

      That is, until now.

During an April, 1972 state visit to Canada, Nixon raised a glass in front of then-prime minister Pierre Trudeau and other dinner guests, and made—very possibly—a prescient claim.

"Tonight we'll dispense with the formalities. I'd like to toast the future prime minister of Canada: to Justin Pierre Trudeau."

Gallantly, the prime minister replied, "I hope he has the grace and skill of the president."

Behind the scenes, however, there was no love lost between Trudeau père and Nixon.

Nixon’s true feelings were revealed on the Watergate tapes, where the president referred to the prime minister as an “asshole” and a “pompous egghead”.

Famously, Trudeau just shrugged and said, “I’ve been called worse things by better people.”

Was Nixon a better prognosticator than president? The world will find out tonight.
