Business group questions need for bike lane along Commercial Drive

The City of Vancouver's plan to expand the cycling network has hit its first pothole.

The Commercial Drive Business Society has accused council's planning, transportation and environment committee of failing to "consult and engage" the group.

The city intends on developing a new bike route along the Drive within five years. But the society wonders if this goal is misplaced.

"To date, one of the most important stakeholders in the Commercial Drive neighbourhood, the business community, has had virtually no formal ability to be a part of a planning process that will have a dramatic effect on the businesses on The Drive,” society Executive Director Nick Pogor said in a news release.

He added that cyclists have told his group that they would prefer tax dollars to rejuvenate nearby existing routes.

"Victoria Drive is also a viable option and one that we would like the city to discuss further with the community," Pogor said.
