Dr. D. Kelly Barnard will preside over today's inquest in Burnaby Coroners Court into a police shooting outside the Starlight Casino in November 2012.

Mehrdad Bayrami, 48, was in Royal Columbian Hospital for 10 days before passing away.

A member of a police emergency response team, Delta police constable Jordan MacWilliams, was initally charged with second-degree murder. But last year, Crown counsel stayed the charge after interviewing more than 35 witnesses, including several officers who were on the scene at the time.

News reports noted that police had responded to a call of a man firing shots at a female employee of the casino. She was reportedly dragged outside as Bayrami held a gun to her head.

Bayrami's daughter Nousha subsequently filed a lawsuit against MacWilliams, but she dropped the civil action at the end of last year.
