Vision Vancouver to set number of candidates for fall election

Members of Vision Vancouver will know this weekend how many candidates the ruling party will field in the fall municipal election.

“The executive of the party makes that decision,” Vision executive director Stepan Vdovine told the Straight in a phone interview today (April 29). “The executive would make this decision this week.”

According to Vdovine, the executive will make the announcement at Vision’s annual general meeting on Sunday (May 4) at the SFU Segal Graduate School of Business (500 Granville Street).

Vision has seven of the 10 seats in council. Vdovine said that all its incumbent councillors are seeking re-election. These are Heather Deal, Kerry Jang, Raymond Louie, Geoff Meggs, Andrea Reimer, Tim Stevenson, and Tony Tang.

Of the nine seats at the school board, Vision has six. All of them want another term, according to Vdovine. These are Patti Bacchus, Ken Clement, Mike Lombardi, Cherie Payne, Allan Wong (who left COPE for Vision this term), and Rob Wynen.

Trevor Loke is the only member of Vision caucus on the park board that will go for re-election, Vdovine confirmed. Aaron Jasper, Constance Barnes, and Sarah Blyth are on the way out. The two remaining seats on park board are held by the Non-Partisan Association.

All incumbents that are going for new terms will have to be approved by a majority vote by members at the May 1 meeting, according to Vdovine.

“There will be a ballot, and the ballot would have each candidate’s name on it, and members would be able to vote for each individual official on the ballot,” the Vision executive explained.

Vision may choose to run full slates for council, park board, and school board, which would indicate that it doesn’t see any need for an electoral cooperation with another party.

Or it could field partial but majority slates, which would mean that it is leaving room for others.

Vision’s erstwhile junior partner, the Coalition of Progressive Electors, has decided to go its own.

Vdovine didn’t give any indication which way his party is going.

“If there are any new seats added, and I say that because I don’t know if we’ll add any more seats or not, or if we do, I don’t know how many,” he said.

But if there are seats to be filled, those will be up for grabs in a nomination meeting on June 22, Vdovine said.

I hope that Vision's members have smartened up and vote all these losers out.
