Pamela Anderson: Farley Mowat’s impact on animals cannot be overestimated

    1 of 1 2 of 1

It is sadly coincidental that Farley Mowat, the original "eco-warrior" and Canada's pre-eminent defender of wildlife, has passed away in the midst of the annual seal slaughter, which Mowat called "perhaps the most atrocious single trespass by human beings against the living world that's taking place today."

Already, 50,000 baby seals have been killed, and 10,000 more will die in the coming weeks. However, if the demand for seal pelts hadn't been decimated by vocal critics like Mowat, hundreds of thousands more seals would be killed, so hopefully that was some consolation to him.

Mowat's compassion for animals extended beyond wildlife. Years ago, he joined a coalition that included PETA and Canadian animal welfare groups to file a complaint against KFC Canada, arguing that the fast-food chain made false claims about the treatment of the chickens raised and killed for its restaurants. Later, KFC Canada introduced a vegetarian sandwich in all of its franchises.

It is impossible to calculate the impact that Farley Mowat and his books have had on animals and the environment. Please, pick up a copy of Never Cry Wolf or A Whale for the Killing today and be inspired to change the world.

Farley Mowat dies and the best Georgia Straight can do is an article by Pamela Anderson?

I love that this article is written by Pamela! I just think it would go over better with the naysayers had the Straight published a recent pic of her with it. She looks stunning these days! Love the short hair on her. :)

      I didn't know Farley was a vegetarian?!
You do realize don't you Pammy that in Farley's books, People of the Deer and The Desperate People{all bullshit} that the First Nations depicted ate Seal and Caribou exclusively in the winters? As well as their children when the game ran out! Have you read those books, Pam? I suggest you do.
How about Sea of Slaughter{all true}, Pam? There is a lot of big words in that one though, Pam. Farley wrote some pretty frightening stuff for the PETA types to wail and gnash their teeth over. As for Never Cry Wolf and A Whale For The Killing. Adolescent fiction. Go hug a bunny and cry, Pam.
R.I.P. Farley. Thank you for Grey Seas Under, And No Birds Sang, The Farfarers and all of your other "Adult" reads.

"all bullshit", Pat? I think you're projecting your inadequacies there. Why don't you detail your life's work for us, Pat, so we can have a good laugh. What is it about the ethical treatment of animals that threatens your masculinity, Pat? Could it be that all the growth hormones in your industrial meat diet has rendered you impotent?

Despite Farley's tireless efforts to educate Canadians for 60 plus years there are still a sizable group of dimwitted drones who obediently and mindlessly support the corporate entities who rape and plunder the land for profit. These lower forms of life are easily identified by their eagerness to show off their shallow intellects. Just start talking about Mowat's work and they'll be sure to refer to him as "hardly know it", branding themselves as slavish company men...cowards and toadies to the bitter end.

I appreciate Ms. Anderson's kind words about Mr. Mowat, but truthfully GS, the boobs kinda detract from the gravitas of anything Ms. Anderson may have to say.

Hey, people, cut Pam some slack. I'm not exactly an eco-activist, but she's from my 'hood on the Island, and she's genuine in her support for animal rights. She's got the right to stand up for her beliefs without being mocked for being beautiful. R.I.P Farley Mowat, and keep standing up for your beliefs, Pamela!

      Nothing against Pamela, but...

... I still think GS could have done better.
