Filipinos are proud that their ancestors fought the first revolution against western colonial rule in Asia.

Every year, Filipinos commemorate the June 12, 1898, proclamation of Philippine independence from Spanish rule.

Like many across the world, Canadians of Filipino ancestry hold several activities in the month of June to celebrate their history.

Here in the Lower Mainland, the 116th anniversary of Philippine independence day was remembered in a dinner hosted Thursday (June 12) by the Philippine consulate general at the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel in downtown Vancouver.

Manila-born dance artist Alvin Erasga Tolentino presented his performance piece Colonial on June 11 and June 12 at the Dance Centre.

On June 21, the Filipino Friends in Richmond will spearhead Pagdiriwang (Celebration) 2014 at the Lansdowne Centre, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In Vancouver, a three-day book sale and book signing event will be held at the Again Treasures Unlimited boutique (1868 West Broadway) with authors Aprodicio and Eleanor Laquian, and Leonardo “Ding” Cunanan from June 27 to29. In addition to the authors’ works, other book titles on subjects dealing with Filipinos and the Philippines will also be on sale.

"Filipinos are proud that their ancestors fought the first revolution against western colonial rule in Asia. "

And yet here they are, residing en mass in the same West that they so bravely fought against!

      Go figure.
