NPA board dumps Ken Charko after he questions process for choosing mayoral candidate

The president of the Dunbar Theatre is off the NPA board.

The centre-right civic party has announced on its website that Ken Charko was "formally removed" on June 17.

It was unnoticed by most civic watchers because it occurred on the same day that the federal government approved the Northern Gateway pipeline.

"The decision to remove Charko was deemed necessary given his decision to knowingly, purposefully, and repeatedly violate the confidentiality that he and the entire NPA Board agreed to respect and uphold as part of their duty as directors," the NPA stated.

Charko said he hasn't had time to digest the decision and declined further comment.

Earlier this month, Charko told the Straight's Carlito Pablo that he disagreed with the board's decision to choose a mayoral candidate rather than allow the members to vote on the matter.

"I believe the process that they should do is that the board should vet the suitability of the candidates, [and] that the membership should vote on the electability of those suitable candidates," Charko explained.

Gee...who will Bob Rennie get his 'inside info' on the NPA, now?

Ken Charko seems like a loose cannon. Vision would never put up with such shenanigans--and especially not in public. The NPA seems to be playing serious ball.

Survivor NPA? Who will they vote off their ever shrinking island next. Who will not even bother going on the island?

I have to say that Charlie Smith has lost all integrity as reporter.

I don't care about the NPA or their issue with this Charko guy, but to read an article titled "NPA board dumps Ken Charko after he questions process for choosing mayoral candidate" and then read the article and find absolutely zero reference to Charko been removed for questioning the process and instead find the actual reason been that he had "knowingly, purposefully, and repeatedly violate the confidentiality that he and the entire NPA Board agreed to respect and uphold as part of their duty as directors"...

Why does the headline say something completely different??? Where is the facts supporting this headline in the story? If there is no basis for the title then why is Charlie Smith using this title?

Then I found Charlie Smith's article from a few days ago where he ENDORSES this Charko guy as a good choice for mayor!!! http://www.straight.com/news/666011/npa-board-should-have-encouraged-ken...

Now it makes sense... when a reporter stops objectively reporting and starts making assertions like that... and only a few days later realizes that this guy got turfed for legally violating Confidentiality... I would want to downplay the fact that I backed that guy for mayor as well.

I've lost a lot of respect for this paper and for Charlie Smith.

      Journalistic integrity:

With respect, perhaps you should read more than the headline. Specifically, the last two paragraphs, where it details how Mr. Charko told a Straight reporter the exact information to which you claim there is "absolutely zero reference".

And perhaps you read the word "after" in the headline to mean "because"?

Regardless, we think most readers will be able to make up their own minds regarding cause and effect.
