Some candidates in the November 15 municipal elections should expect a request for an interview with labour representatives.

If they’re running in Vancouver, Electoral Area A, Richmond, the City of North Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver, or the District of West Vancouver, the notices will come from the Vancouver and District Labour Council.

The VDLC is one of the oldest labour organizations in the country.

“We’re looking for progressive candidates who have good social and economic policies, that are also aware of the concerns the labour movement would have with regards to labour relations, who would take good positions against public-private partnerships and the privatization or contracting out of city work, municipal work,” VDLC president Joey Hartman told the Straight in a phone interview.

The VDLC has started sending out survey forms to declared candidates. It has begun to receive completed questionnaires.

“From those surveys, we’ll determine who we shall be interviewing,” Hartman said.

Although the labour organization doesn’t make campaign contributions, its member unions do.

The VDLC represents more than 60,000 workers from over 100 unions.

Hartman heads a committee that will vet municipal candidates for endorsement by the VDLC. The labour council will vote on its recommended candidates on September 16.

“We do know that people who are interested in progressive and labour-supportive candidates will wait for our list and refer to it when they’re making their choices,” Hartman said.
