Garibaldi Park shouldn’t be going to the dogs

I was dismayed to see a photo of a dog walking in Garibaldi Provincial Park in the most recent Outside column by Jack Christie. Dogs are not allowed in any part of the park, a fact Christie acknowledges at the end of his article. Publishing a photo of a dog hiking on the Cheakamus Lake trail (off-leash no less!) shows a total disregard for the rules and sends readers the message that taking dogs into Garibaldi is okay.

Christie is a respected local outdoors person, and as such I expect more from him. The rules are there for a reason. Garibaldi Provincial Park encompasses a unique and delicate ecosystem and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. As much as I think dogs make wonderful hiking partners, they don’t belong in Garibaldi Provincial Park.
