A New Year's Eve snowfall and some extremely cold temperatures have turned some Vancouver side streets into outdoor skating rinks.

CBC News has quoted one 18-year-old East Van resident, Sam MacTavish, who filmed himself skating on a stretch of Elgin Street.

He told reporter Maryse Zeidler than he wanted to demonstrate how dangerous conditions have become.

Elgin Street wasn't the only place where folks were putting on the blades.

While some are amused by the snow, others have taken to social media to criticize the City of Vancouver for not doing more to make the streets and sidewalks more passable.

On New Year's Eve, Mayor Gregor Robertson's office put out a tweet saying crews were on the streets clearing main roads and "priority hills".
