This weekend, the Vancouver Police Department announced a breakthrough in connection with three recent sex crimes along the Cambie corridor.

A 25-year-old man is in custody until he appears in court on Tuesday (May 20).

An officer arrested the man around 5:30 p.m. on May 16 after concluding that he matched the description given by victims of sexual assaults earlier that week.

The suspect has not been charged and his name has not been released.

In the first sexual assault, a 22-year-old woman reported that she was attacked around 5:15 p.m. on May 12 at West 37th Avenue and Cambie Street.

Two days later around 11 p.m., a 19-year-old woman was attacked at West 45th Avenue and Cambie Street.

The following day at 3:30 p.m., a 38-year-old woman was assaulted at West 42nd Avenue and Cambie Street.

Police issued a composite sketch of the suspect after the first attack.

What bothers me is that I know this guy will be out on the street in a short time and given the usual progress of a sexual predator, he will only get worse. I have no doubt that he's responsible for way more assaults than are involved in this case and his obsession is serious and probably untreatable.

What bothers me is the trauma that these women endured. I hope they have adequate support and recover well. I am glad they apprehended the person who is thought to have been responsible for theses assaults. It is likely that the person who committed these violent acts is not mentally sound - acting violently toward random people is well outside normal and acceptable societal behaviour. Hopefully he can be treated so that he understands the harm he caused and so he does not act this way in the future. Hopefully he has the desire and the opportunity to make meaningful amends. Focussing on retribution and punishment is short-sighted. An eye for an eye makes us all blind.

This is why a lot of women are learning martial arts in order to defend themselves & kick the sh*t out of these losers!

I hope the police release this guy back onto the streets soon because eventually this 25 year old guy will encounter a man or woman who is a skilled fighter and he will get his own *ss handed to him on a silver platter. There's no need for sympathy for repeat offenders because some people have to learn the hard way.
