Kindergarten to Grade 12 students in Surrey are going to have a long weekend.

That's because the board of education has closed all schools after a heavy weekend snowfall.

On Friday (February 3), a record 12 centimetres of snow fell in a single day at Vancouver International Airport, breaking the previous record of 10.7 centimetres in 1946.

In Abbotsford, 38 centimetres fell over the weekend, creating massive traffic headaches.

In the wake of this, schools are also closed in Abbotsford today, as well as in Langley, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Hope, and Chilliwack.

University of the Fraser Valley classes are also closed today.

However, all classes are open at Simon Fraser University after being cancelled on Burnaby Mountain last Friday.

UBC's Vancouver campus, the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Langara, Vancouver Community College, Capilano University, Douglas College, Kwantlen Polytechnic University are also open today.

Officials have advised students, faculty, and staff to give themselves extra time on their commute to these institutions.
