A special prosecutor has been appointed to assist the police investigation of indirect political contributions in B.C.

Vancouver lawyer David Butcher will provide legal advice to the RCMP.

The RCMP had asked the Criminal Justice Branch of the Department of Justice to appoint a special prosecutor.

On March 6 this year, Elections B.C. announced that it was reviewing information about indirect political contributions and other violations of the election law.

The Election Act prohibits making political donations on behalf of another entity.

Four days later on March 10, Elections B.C. declared that it is referring its investigation to the RCMP.

The office made the move to ensure that its administration of the May 9, 2017 provincial election is not compromised.
