Grouse Mountain will soon be the location of Metro Vancouver's latest regional park.

Metro Vancouver Regional District announced today (April 12) that the 75-hectare regional park, located on the southern slope of Grouse Mountain, will include the popular 2.9-kilometre Grouse Grind, B.C. Mountaineering Club trails, and parts of Baden-Powell trails.

The North Shore park will become Metro Vancouver's 24th regional park on May 1.

As the area includes mature forests, mountain streams, and wildlife (such as black bears, cougars, barred owls, black-tailed deers, red-legged frogs), Metro Vancouver board chair Greg Moore stated in a news release that the establishment of the park will help to protect the ecosystem.

Metro Vancouver Parks Committee chair Heather Deal stated that the Vancouver Regional Parks system will become responsible for the annual maintenance of the Grouse Grind and that the park will be evaluated for potential trail additions or improvements in the future.

The Metro Vancouver Regional District entered into a long-term licence agreement with the Greater Vancouver Water District, which owned the land for over 85 years, to create the park. The district also worked with the privately owned Grouse Mountain Resorts, which the park will be adjacent to, on elements near the base of the mountain.

The name of the park and its official opening are yet to be announced.
