YMCA opens facilities to all B.C. wildfire evacuees
YMCA Canada has announced that it will open its B.C. locations to people affected by the wildfires burning through the province’s interior.
The YMCA runs 12 locations in Prince George, Kamloops, Kelowna, Surrey, Vancouver, and Vancouver Island. Evacuees are welcome to stop by at any one of these facilities, where they may shower, rest, clean up, and participate in the centre’s drop-in basketball, fitness, or swimming programs for free.
“We know that the province and many of B.C.’s children and families are in a state of emergency right now,” said Amanda Alexander, CEO of the YMCA of Northern BC, in a press statement, “and we welcome all people impacted by the wildfires to find refuge at the Y.”
Evacuees visiting the YMCA must arrive with identification that includes their photo and home address to access the amenities.
The YMCA’s 12 B.C. locations are listed below.
As of today (July 10), it is estimated that 10,000 B.C. residents have been evacuated from their homes as wildfires continue to grow. Those interested in aiding the fire relief may make a donation on the Canadian Red Cross website or at any B.C. Liquor Store. You may also text FIRES to 45678 to donate $10 to the Canadian Red Cross.
