The image above was put on Facebook as a warning.

It shows a blanket covering a family dog that died on Frdiay (July 28) after being left in a hot car.

"Friends, this was posted as a reminder that this CAN HAPPEN - to anyone," Shaughnessy Veterinary Hospital says on its Facebook page. "They are not 'bad' pet people. Take it to heart, remember this, and NEVER let it happen to you. Be careful when you cast stones."

Despite the caution from the Port Coquitlam animal hospital, some comments below the post were not as compassionate to the people responsible for the dog.

"These owners will not get sympathy from anyone, this was a preventable tragedy. Charges of animal abuse should be considered," wrote one person.

"How are they distraught. Wtf did they think would happen?! Good. Feel the pain, this poor dog sure did when you killed it. This should be grounds for animal cruelty charges and a ban on owning animals," another wrote.

According to the PETA website, parked cars are "deathtraps for dogs".

"Animals can sustain brain damage or even die from heatstroke in just 15 minutes," the website says. "Beating the heat is extra tough for dogs because they can only cool themselves by panting and by sweating through their paw pads."
