Donald Trump's ghostwriter has been a thorn in his side for over a year.

It was in June of 2016 that Tony Schwartz, coauthor of the 1987 bestseller The Art of the Deal, went public about Trump in a blistering New Yorker story by Jane Mayer.

Schwartz expressed regret over putting "lipstick on a pig".

“I genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of civilization," Schwartz said at the time.

In a subsequent interview with CNN, Schwartz referred to Trump as a "monster".

This weekend, Schwartz is back in the news over an interview he gave to the Independent, which is a British newspaper.

He claimed that Trump will call it quits in return for immunity from prosecution because the Russia investigation is closing in on him at "blinding speed".

"Trump's presidency is effectively over," Schwartz said. "Would be amazed if he survives till the end of the year. More likely resigns by fall, if not sooner."
