B.C. Liberals create rules committee for next leadership race

The future of the B.C. Liberal party could be heavily influenced by a new committee formed on the weekend.

The executive named four members to develop procedures for guiding the upcoming leadership race.

Party president Sharon White, vice president Donald Silversides, membership chair Luke Strombold, and constitutional adviser Frank Carson will formalize a framework that the executive agrees upon, based on input from caucus members and constituency association presidents.

If the B.C. Liberals choose a one member–one vote system, it could help candidates who can sign up large numbers before any deadline is imposed.

However, if they rely on a system that gives each constituency an equal say, that might favour candidates who can secure the support of constituency executives.

In the last party leadership race in 2011, the party executive used a preferential ballot.

Each member could vote, but results were adjusted to ensure that each constituency association had an equal say in the outcome.

Christy Clark narrowly won in part because she fared extraordinarily well in constituencies represented by NDP MLAs.

She only had the support of one caucus member, Harry Bloy, but still managed to defeat former cabinet minister Kevin Falcon on the third ballot by a 52 percent to 48 percent margin.
