Two open houses are scheduled for a proposed walking and cycling bridge in East Vancouver.

The 60-metre infrastructure crossing the Grandview Cut at McLean Drive will have a 3.5-metre cycling path and a 2.5-metre walking track.

The proposed bridge is part of the Metro North Transmission Project of B.C. Hydro, which involves the addition of a 230 kilovolt transmission line from Coquitlam to Vancouver.

The bridge will carry underneath its structure a portion of the transmission line.

The new transmission will run under Vancouver city streets, and end at the Mount Pleasant Substation.

According to B.C. Hydro, the line coming from Burnaby will cross Highway 1 under East 2nd Avenue to Windermere Street. From there, the cable goes to East 8th Avenue, cross Grandview Cut on McLean Drive, run along East 7th Avenue, and then East 6th Avenue all the way to the Mount Pleasant Substation on the west side of the city.

The bridge will have lighting for safety and visibility purposes.

The dedicated walking and cycling bridge is also intended to improve connections for people using the Central Valley Greenway, a regional trail and bike path.

The 25-kilometre Central Valley Greenway is composed of off-road and on-street routes following the SkyTrain line. It links Vancouver, Burnaby, and New Westminster

The Grandview Cut was dug during the 1900s so trains can come to a new station downtown.

B.C. Hydro staff will be at the northeast corner of Woodland Drive and North Grandview Highway to answer questions about the proposed bridge on Saturday (August 26) from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Tuesday (August 29) from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
