A right-wing political strategist has warned politicians that they might be murdered if they vote to impeach the U.S. president.

In an interview broadcast on TMZ, Roger Stone also predicted that there will be civil war if Donald Trump is forced out of office.

"Try to impeach him. Just try it," Stone dared. "You will have a spasm of violence in this country and insurrection like you’ve never seen.”

Stone, a former Trump campaign adviser, noted that "both sides are heavily armed".

"The people will not stand for impeachment," Stone declared. "A politician who votes for it would be endangering their own life. There will be violence on both sides. I’ll make this clear. I’m not advocating violence, but I’m predicting it.”

Roger Stone suggests politicians will be killed if they vote to remove Trump as president.

“The people who are calling for impeachment are the people who didn’t vote for him," Stone said at the beginning of the interview. "They need to get over it. They lost.

"Their candidate had every advantage," he continued. "She spent $2 billion. He spent $275 million. Sorry. He whipped her ass. It’s over."

Under U.S. law, the House of Representatives can launch impeachment proceedings against the president.

It must pass articles of impeachment, which are the formal allegations of wrongdoing.

Then the U.S. Senate tries the accused. The chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court oversees these proceedings.

Two-thirds of the Senate must approve the "conviction" for the president to be removed from office.

This conviction does not prevent the president from also facing criminal charges.
