At least five people are dead and more than 1,000 people have been rescued in what weather experts are calling a once-in-a-500-year-storm.

Tropical Storm Harvey has pounded the Texas coast, particularly between Corpus Christi and Houston.

The National Weather Service has warned people not to escape flooding in the attics of their homes because they could become trapped as water levels continue rising.

Instead, officials are recommending people get on the roof and call 911.

The National Weather Service is predicting 22 inches of more rain in Houston over the next week.

Houston is home to nearly 2.4 million residents and its area is so large that it could include the cities of San Francisco and Boston.

Texas refineries are huge producers of gasoline and aviation fuel, so the storm could have an effect on prices of these products in the days and weeks to come.

Below, you can see some images of Houston that are being posted on social media.
