A new poll of 1,505 Canadians shows they have distinctly different attitudes about direct foreign investment, depending on the country of origin.

The survey by the Angus Reid Institute shows that 58 percent say it's "worth it to prevent Chinese takeovers of Canadian companies".

The hostility to direct foreign investment was even higher if it originates from Russia or the United Arab Emirates.

However, respondents felt that direct foreign investment was far more acceptabe if it came from the United Kingdom, the United States, or the European Union.

Of the six jurisdictions surveyed, the least popular source of foreign investment was Russia, particularly in military-defence and banking and financial services.

In the table below you can see the breakdown by sectors.

U.K. investment in health care is more popular than Russian investment in military companies.
