Expect more SkyTrain Expo Line delays this weekend

The replacement of a rail along the SkyTrain Expo Line is going to add 15 to 20 minutes to travel times during parts of this weekend, according to TransLink.

Trains will take longer to reach their destinations from 10:30 p.m. on Saturday (September 23) to 2 a.m. Sunday (September 23), and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

The Sunday slowdown will be due to SkyTrain cars only be using one track in both directions between Main Street–Science World and Commercial-Broadway stations.

The curved section between the two stations is being replaced.

"The rail must be pre-bent before it is lifted by crane up to track level and installed," TransLink said in a statement. "The contractor performing the work needs 15 continuous hours to complete the job."

These delays will coincide with Vancouver hosting a Walk for Reconciliation, which starts on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. near the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

It means East Side residents who plan on reaching the event via SkyTrain should plan for an early departure.

The city's last Walk for Reconciliation in 2013 attracted 70,000 people.
