Even though many pundits expect low voter turnout in the October 14 Vancouver council by-election, a fair number participated in the first day of advance voting.

According to the City of Vancouver, 1,988 ballots were cast at Vancouver City Hall on October 4.

Voters can choose one candidate for council and up to nine candidates for the Vancouver school board.

The council by-election is to fill the seat vacated by Geoff Meggs, who is now Premier John Horgan's chief of staff.

The next day of advance voting takes place on Tuesday (October 10) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the same location.

In the 2014 municipal election, there were 7,282 ballots cast at Vancouver City Hall in eight days of advance voting.

More than 30,000 votes cast were also cast in eight days of advance voting at seven other locations around the city that year.

To be eligible to vote, a person must be a Canadian citizen and 18 years or older as of October 14, as well as a resident of B.C. for the previous six months and Vancouver for the previous 30 days.

According to a City of Vancouver news release, anyone can register to vote at Vancouver City Hall if they bring two pieces of identification, including one with a signature, to the polling location.

There, they must complete a voter registration form.
