November beaver moon may be seen tonight in Vancouver

You may know the terms harvest moon, snow moon, and pink moon.

But have you ever heard of a beaver moon?

That's one term to describe the full moon in November when beavers are known to get ready for winter by preparing their dams.

It may be visible tonight in Vancouver; it will be opposite the sun at 10:23 p.m., though the moon will appear full through to Sunday morning.

It's also called Hunter's moon because that's the time of the year when deer are at their fattest, making them targets for human predators.

Beavers, on the other hand, worry more about coyotes, wolves, and bears.

So these creatures sometimes like creating moats around their lodges, which have underwater entrances. This keeps them safe from larger animals.

The largest known beaver dam was 850 metres in Alberta's Wood Buffalo National Park.

This beaver dam was built next to the Skagit River.
