Over/Unders and Fun Bets: Canucks @ Sharks

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Tonight, the Vancouver Canucks (8-6-2) are in San Jose to take on the Sharks (8-6-0). Vancouver hopes to rebound from an abysmal effort in Anaheim in which the team got outshot badly and lost 4-1.

Here are some fun bets to keep an eye on as the game progresses. If only Vegas had odds like these.

      Over/Unders

How many times Joe Thornton embarrasses Erik Gudbranson

      Over/Under: 0.5

After a pitiful game against Anaheim, Gudbranson will be looking to exert himself early in this one. With Chris Tanev out of the lineup (and oh man, he was sorely missed against Anaheim), Gudbranson is the only blueliner in the lineup who prides himself on being a defensive specialist.

Meanwhile ‘Jumbo’ Joe Thornton will be hoping to cause havoc in the Canucks’ zone. One of the best passers ever to play, Thornton and Gudbranson will definitely clash, and Canucks fans have to be hoping that their big guy can keep up with San Jose’s.

      Prediction: Over

How many times Jannik Hansen is called The Speedy Dane’ by broadcasters

      Over/Under: 1.5

The Johns Shorthouse and Garrett love referring to Hansen as such, and since the former Canuck will likely play tonight after being scratched a few times earlier in the lineup, the duo are sure to refer back to their favourite moniker.

      Prediction: Under, but it’ll happen

Times Jake Virtanen's benching for Loui Eriksson is mentioned

      Over/Under: 2.5

It'll be focused on a lot, definitely once in the pregame and then a couple times through the game as the Sedin line is scrutinized. Virtanen is a better fit with the twins than Eriksson has shown to be thus far, and while it's definitely a must for the Canucks to give Eriksson the opportunity to prove that last season was a fluke, it's an absolute shame (and probably a mistake) that Virtanen had to be the one relegated to the press box.

      Prediction: Over

Times Nikolay Goldobin and his strong start in the AHL is brought up

      Over/Under: 1.5

This’ll definitely happen. Goldobin has 14 points in 12 games for Utica and given the obsession Canucks fans rightly have for youngsters, it’ll be a subject of conversation.

      Prediction: Over

Shots on Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom

      Over/Under: 27

Markstrom has faced 27 or more shots in eight of his 13 starts this season, and in all of the last four as the Canucks’ early season magic is starting to disappear a little bit.

Prediction: Tempted to say under, but with Tanev, has to be Over.

Shots on San Jose goaltender Aaron Dell

      Over/Under: 25

San Jose has been one of the best teams on defence so far this year, with players like Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Brent Burns, Paul Martin and Brenden Dillon forming one of the best defensive corps in the league.

      Prediction: Under

Goals by Brent Burns, who hasn’t scored so far this year

      Over/Under: 0.5

One has to think his time is coming. If the Canucks allow the Sharks on the powerplay too often, it could be tonight. Here’s betting they know that and limit Chewbacca’s opportunities from the point.

      Prediction: Under

      Who Wins?

Vegas like the Sharks, and it’s hard not to agree with the experts here. The Sharks are playing well (they had won four in a row before getting routed 5-1 by Tampa Bay on Wednesday). That loss should only motivate the Sharks.

Since the Canucks are without Tanev (who, it should be noted is the team’s best player and it’s not particularly close), it’s too tempting to go against Vancouver.

      Prediction: Sharks 3-1
