Amnesty International calls for George W. Bush’s arrest as Surrey visit looms

Amnesty International is calling on authorities to arrest and prosecute former U.S. president George W. Bush over his alleged involvement in torture when he makes an expected visit to Canada.

The human-rights group says it has submitted a memorandum to Canadian officials that outlines the case for why Bush is legally responsible for human-rights violations that took place between 2002 and 2009.

According to Amnesty International, when Bush was president he authorized the use of “advanced interrogation techniques” on individuals held as part of a secret CIA detention program.

The techniques allegedly included sleep deprivation and “waterboarding”, a form of simulated drowning that human-rights groups describe as torture. Amnesty International says Bush admitted he authorized the use of waterboarding.

Bush is slated to speak at an economic conference in Surrey, B.C., on October 20.

“Canada is required by its international obligations to arrest and prosecute former President Bush given his responsibility for crimes under international law including torture,” Amnesty International spokesperson Susan Lee said in a statement released today (October 12).

“A failure by Canada to take action during his visit would violate the UN Convention against Torture and demonstrate contempt for fundamental human rights,” Lee said.

Canada is not a socially progressive country when compared to most of first world Europe, despite what it wants to believe. Bush will walk free, as Canada cares too much about what the United States thinks.

The international court at the Hague needs to charge Bush as this will niot happen. This attempt to draw attention to Bush as war criminal is a good thing.
As far as attacking Amnesty, a serious error. They do some very important work on behalf of people who are locked up and tortured all around the world. Brava to them.
The comments about China are just silly in the context of the Bush arrest question.

Sad to see a once great organization like Amnesty International lose its focus and direction to the point that it now has to waste its time with pointless ideological exercises like this when there is so much necessary work to be done in the world. Under its current leadership, AI can no longer expect my support.

Let me explain myself here: there are places and situations where innocent people need a voice. The Christians, for example, need the international community to stand up for them in countries like Iran ect. But mercy must be put in perspective. But standing with evil men and women isn't the answer to our worlds problems. But the arrest of Mr Bush is totally a waste of time.Fighting for affordable housing and fighting poverty is a greater cause!!!!

      Keep it up! Respect!
Concerned folk & those respectfully passed; we all need to understand how those with financial power have gained in their path of destruction.
G.W.Bush is not a authourity of economics but a puppet for the elite. This indivdual is narcisstic and an international sociopath much like his predecessors. Capatilism at it's best. Not Democratic or Empathtic.
Shame on Canadian's to allow this mega-family monster to even cross our borders.

Although this is a wonderful political gesture, its only that. Canada's government is powerless to force an arrest. We the people on the other hand are not powerless. We must make it clear that international criminals such as he are not welcome on our soil. Phone your local police and inform them that a know fugitive is about to enter Canada and you wish him arrested. Stop all traffic from the airport until he returns to the States. Its our country, not the politicians, and we have the right to decide who visits.
