B.C. Hydro reports power outages along south coast as major storm approaches

Sechelt and Powell River were among the first mainland communities where many customers were without electricity

      The storm headed to the south coast of B.C. already appears to be having an impact.

      Earlier this afternoon, B.C. Hydro reported multiple power outages in the Sechelt area on the southern section of the Sunshine Coast. Approximately 6,000 customers were left without electricity.

      In addition, about 4,000 customers lost power in Powell River on the northern Sunshine Coast.

      Across the Sunshine Coast and the Lower Mainland, there are 34 outages and 15,856 customers who are affected (as of this writing).

      On Vancouver Island, some customers were without power this afternoon in Port Alberni, Lake Cowichan, Parksville, Qualicum Bay, and Port Renfrew.

      According to meteorologists, the cyclone over the Pacific Ocean set a record for minimum sea-level pressure today.
